Five things to look for when you're hiring a car mover

You need to be sure your choice of car mover will take some real responsibility for your vehicle.

Here's a list of five pointers to finding a reliable car mover who will not just look at your wallet. A mover who will accept his contract responsibly and look after you.

First, learn if the person you are talking with is a car mover who runs his own business, who will be interested in your car, or merely a commission agent

Then, see if he has a network of offices in your new city. Companies with people in several areas of your new location will give you prompt, local service when you pick up your car. Obviously this is better than having to rely on a small office on the other side of town. Especially if anything happens during your move.

Further, is the mover a member of a national association? Established movers will almost certainly belong to the American Moving and Storage Association, or a similar body. That means he will have a code of conduct to comply with. If there is damage or an accident, you can probably call the association for help. If he does not belong, however, you may very well question how professional he will be when handling your car.

A system of building a quote gives you, the customer, confidence in the mover. You can tell a mover has a system when he is asking for many details about the car, taking notes, thoroughly inspecting the vehicle and giving you a quote that is specific to your car. Check if your mover does this, or just quotes off the top of his head. Does the mover give a hasty quote, or does he use a quote-building system that is comprehensive and yet specific about your car?

Finally: is he using best practice talking with you? Is he clear, does he answer all the questions, does he accept your suggestions?

I would say, don't select your car mover just on price. Least costly is not always best. Consider instead a mover who will take responsibility for your car.
